From Taylor to Mintzberg and the reorganisation of models of production in the automotive industry in the 1970s, work groups continue to come back to haunt management. A perspective by Jean-Baptiste Suquet, professor at NEOMA.
Work groups are useful in helping an organisation operate through their regulatory, socialising, protective, instructive and innovative functions, and they challenge the traditional hierarchical management posture as a mode difficult to identify, observe and control, thus appealing to a form of indirect management.
