 **From Taylor to Mintzberg and the reorganisation of models of production in the automotive industry in the 1970s, work groups continue to come back to haunt management. A perspective by Jean-Baptiste Suquet, professor at NEOMA.**

Work groups are useful in helping an organisation operate through their regulatory, socialising, protective, instructive and innovative functions, and they challenge the traditional hierarchical management posture as a mode difficult to identify, observe and control, thus appealing to a form of indirect management.
